Zonely - Redefining Infill Development

Doc4 Design partnered with Zonely to design and develop the full digital platform, focusing on translating a complex municipal planning system into a clear and usable web application. The primary challenge was turning a regulatory concept built around pre-approved housing designs into something that both city planners and developers could navigate without friction. Doc4 Design led both the product design and technical implementation, ensuring the platform could support real-world permitting workflows while remaining flexible enough to scale across different municipalities.

On the development side, the platform was built with a structured, data-driven architecture that treats housing patterns as modular components rather than static content. This approach allows each design pattern to be managed, updated, and reused across multiple jurisdictions without duplicating logic or creating inconsistencies. It also enables the system to adapt as new zoning rules and approval criteria are introduced, keeping the platform aligned with evolving planning requirements.

The interface was designed to simplify what is traditionally a dense and fragmented approval process. Doc4 Design focused on creating a user experience that makes it easy to browse, evaluate, and apply approved housing patterns in context. By connecting the design system with the underlying workflow logic, the platform transforms permitting from a manual review process into a streamlined digital system that supports faster decision making and more consistent outcomes.
